Testimony by Joseph C. King for a Poor Debtor's Oath given in Rhode Island before Justices Manchester and Philip. C. [Scott?] for the creditor, John H. Lonsdale. The document is a handwritten transcript of answers given to questions by the representative attorneys asking for details of the petitioner's financial condition and testimony by witnesses. Provides numerous details about King's activities in California during the Gold Rush era including shares of ownership in mining claims, locations such as Willow Springs, Mount Hope Hill,and Georgetown, and the amount of money invested and made. Includes the names of attorneys and witnesses called to testify. The attorney representing Mr. King, Henry Howard, later served as the governor of Rhode Island (1873-1875). Also Includes original envelope postmarked from and addressed to Lonsdale in Providence, Rhode Island.
